Anwar Ibrahim, Malaysia’s Prime Minister, mourned the death of his “dear friend” Ismail Haniyeh. He said that he condemns the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh. He said the killing was the most heinous kind, which is plainly designed to derail the ongoing talks of ceasefire in Gaza, aiming to end the carnage that has killed over 40,000 Palestinians.

Calling out the silence of the world leaders in not pressuring Israel to end the war, he said, “only the heedless and unconscionable will not see the need to intensify pressure on Israel to stop their murderous rampage”.

Voicing his concerns over the Palestinian population who has been subjected to brutal assault for nearly a year now, Ibrahim said he is worried about what this tragedy would mean for the Palestinians, “who have been already bene so cruelly subjected to so much pain, hardship, and suffering from people for so many decades”.

Haniyeh has been considered as the voice of hope for the Palestinians as he led diplomatic talks on ending the war on behalf of Hamas.

The Malaysian PM, met with Haniyeh on May this year while he was on a working trip to Qatar. He was criticised for the meeting. Refuting the backlashes, Ibrahim wrote that “Detractors who have criticised me for meeting with Ismail Haniyeh in the past, fail to appreciate Haniyeh’s profound desire for a peaceful Middle East and a Palestinian nation restored to its rightful dignity”.

He ended his X post with a mourning note that read, “I mourn the death of my dear friend and a valiant advocate for his people (Palestinians)”.

His statement was included with a video of him talking with senior Hamas official Dr Basem Naim. Expressing his condolences, he said, “Please be assured that we are as strong as ever in our support, our commitment for an independent Palestine”. The Hamas official thanked Ibrahim for calling and expressing condolences for the “bib big loss”.
