US Police Arrest Indian-Origin Students For Participating in Pro-Palestine Protest; Violent Crackdown On Protesters Including Professors

Indian-origin students studying in the Princeton University were arrested for taking part in the pro-Palestine protest in the campus, said student and alumni newspaper. The students arrested were identified as Achinthya Sivalinga from Tamil Nadu and Hassan Sayed. They were arrested for attending the pro-Palestine encampment in the university courtyard on early Thursday morning.

The students were charged with trespassing and have been “immediately barred from the campus”. The students were also charged with disciplinary action. Jennifer Morrill, a university spokesperson told media that the students were detained “after repeated warnings from the Department of Public Safety to cease the activity and leave the area”.

Achinthya Sivalingam is a student doing Masters in Public Affairs in International Development and Hassan Syed is a PhD candidate.

Pro-Palestine protest has been taking over the universities in US. It started to get out of the authorities hands when the Columbia University asked police to detain students who were protesting on the “free speech zone”. More than 100 students were arrested and several others were suspended. The Columbia University students doubled in numbers from the next day onwards and it caught wider media attention.

Several other universities also joined the protest pledging their solidarity with Gaza and and the students of Columbia. Several prominent figures including the Gaza journalist Motaz Azaiza also joined the protests.

Reportedly, over 30 universities has took to campus lawns and streets protesting for the cause of Gaza and Palestinians. They demand that the universities should distance itself from funding Israel. “Disclose! Divest! We will not stop! We will not rest! has become the new anthem of the protesting students. New Yorkers are in the streets pledging solidarity with the university students and the Palestinians.

Scenes from Emory University in Atlanta showed police force violently arresting students and professors who joined the pro-Palestine protest.
