Connectivity in the automotive market has surged over the last decade, with most modern vehicles now featuring advanced infotainment systems equipped with Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, or both. These systems seamlessly connect smartphones to cars, enhancing the driving experience. Apple recently announced significant updates to CarPlay, as part of the iOS 18 update.
New Features and Capabilities
The new-generation CarPlay extends beyond the infotainment screen into the driver’s instrument display, introducing a range of customization options. Drivers can now personalize onboard displays, drive modes, and temperature settings. Additionally, the latest CarPlay version offers an expanded array of notifications on both instrument and infotainment displays, including alerts from the tire pressure monitoring system.

Elaborating on the new features, CarPlay now integrates functionalities such as climate control and Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). Users can adjust climate settings directly through CarPlay, with the menu customizable to show the number of seats and climate zones in the car. Manufacturers can also add buttons for extra functions like seat heaters. The system also incorporates reversing cameras, inclinometers, and performance gauges that provide drive-related information, which can be tailored according to the vehicle’s powertrain—be it petrol, diesel, hybrid, or fully electric. For electric vehicles (EVs), CarPlay can display critical information such as range and the nearest charging station directly on the home screen.
Enhanced Navigation and Off-Road Capabilities
The updated CarPlay system also enhances navigation and off-road capabilities, integrating features like reversing cameras and off-road performance gauges. This comprehensive suite of tools is designed to offer drivers detailed drive-related information, including terrain angles and vehicle pitch and roll. The performance gauge adjusts based on the car’s powertrain, ensuring that both traditional and electric vehicles can benefit from precise, real-time data.
Launch and Implementation
Porsche and Aston Martin are the first brands to confirm the implementation of the new CarPlay in their upcoming models. These brands are expected to introduce vehicles equipped with the latest CarPlay features by the end of the year. As more manufacturers adopt the updated CarPlay, it will likely become a standard feature in new car models worldwide, including those launching in India next year.

CarPlay for Motorcycles
In a move to expand its reach, Apple is also making the new CarPlay compatible with modern and premium motorcycles, which increasingly feature digital instrument clusters. This integration brings functionalities such as ABS, traction control, navigation, music, call controls, and message alerts to two-wheelers. This expansion aims to cater to tech-savvy riders looking to enhance their riding experience with advanced digital features.
The next-gen Apple CarPlay, set to roll out with iOS 18 in September, represents a significant leap in automotive connectivity. With features extending into the driver’s display and enhanced customization options, CarPlay aims to provide a seamless and integrated driving experience. As leading car manufacturers adopt this technology, both car and motorcycle enthusiasts can look forward to a more connected and informed driving experience.
