Hyundai Bayon To Get New Locally Build 1.2-Litre Turbo-Petrol Engine

Hyundai intends to introduce the Bayon small SUV to India the following year. It is anticipated that the vehicle would be propelled by a brand-new 1.2-litre 4-cylinder turbo-petrol engine. As we revealed last year, the Bayon is a worldwide model that shares the same platform as the i20. When it debuts in India in the middle of 2026, it will compete with the well-liked Maruti Suzuki Fronx.

The Korean automaker’s current 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine, which powers the Venue and i20, and the 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine, which powers the Creta, Verna, and Alcazar, will be replaced by a new locally-built 1.2-litre engine for the Indian market. The 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine will be more compact and fuel-efficient than the 1.5-litre motor (160 horsepower, 253 Nm), while providing more torque and drivability than the 1.0-litre unit (120 horsepower, 172 Nm). Additionally, it is being designed to be hybrid-ready, therefore it will probably be essential to Hyundai’s next hybrid drivetrains. Currently, the 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine has two possible gearbox options: an e-CVT or a dual-clutch automatic, depending on the application.

The 2026 Hyundai Bayon, as well as upcoming i20, Venue, and other models priced between Rs 15 and Rs 20 lakh, are anticipated to be powered by the new engine, according to our sources. It is unclear whether the 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine will make its debut with the small SUV as Hyundai prepares to introduce the next-generation Venue in October 2025. These powertrains could also be featured in the India-spec version of the Bayon, which is accessible in foreign countries with a 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine mated to a 6-speed manual and a 7-speed DCT.

Thanks to a split headlamp configuration that includes sharp primary units beneath and an LED strip on the bonnet, the Bayon’s front end looks a lot like the Verna. Additionally, there is a broad air dam with a honeycomb design that encircles the whole body and is trimmed in silver and black plastic.

A blacked-out area at the back of the small SUV has rakish boomerang-shaped tail-lamps joined by an LED strip, along with indicators, black cladding, and silver bumper trim. The Bayon also has 17-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels and several cuts and creases on the side.

Many parts of the Bayon’s all-black interior are similar to those of Hyundai cars, including the HVAC control panel, 10.25-inch infotainment touchscreen, 10.25-inch digital driver’s display, and the well-known four-spoke steering wheel. Wireless charging, over-the-air (OTA) updates, fast-charging USB Type-C ports, ambient lighting, ADAS, an 8-speaker Bose sound system, and other creature pleasures are all included. A 411-litre boot is also included with the Bayon.
