Next-Gen Volkswagen Golf GTI Will Be Electric With Fully-Electric Powertrain

Volkswagen has begun developing the hot hatch’s next generation. The new generation Golf GTI will be entirely electric, however this is still a ways off. Thomas Schäfer, the CEO of Volkswagen, has acknowledged this development.

Schäfer affirmed that it will be a “monster car” in an interview published with news extracted from a report. With its fair number of modifications along the road, the current Golf GTI will be extended until the end of this decade. The new battery-powered Golf will be built on a brand-new SSP architecture, according to the report.

Though there are currently few details available, it has been revealed that the all-electric Golf GTI will be a front-wheel drive vehicle, even though its closest electric brother, the ID.3 GTX, is powered by a 322 horsepower electric motor that drives the rear wheels. That is 80 horsepower more than the 2.0-litre turbocharged gasoline engine that powers the current Golf GTI. However, because the electric motor precisely controls the torque distribution to each front tire, the e-Golf GTI should provide a similar performance improvement.

Nevertheless, the more powerful Golf R will include a dual-motor, all-wheel drive system, which will increase control and accuracy on the asphalt. According to Schäfer, he has already driven a couple of the all-electric Golf GTI prototypes, which are expected to go on sale in 2026. The forthcoming all-electric Golf will continue to use the renowned GTI suspension, which provides the ideal balance of grand touring comfort and sports car-like involvement, just like the present Golf GTI.

What about the sound, though? Will the level of excitement be the same? According to Schaefer, the electric golf will have a soundtrack and realistic gearshifts. It will also include a drift mode, he revealed.

Volkswagen is currently working on the Golf GTI’s design, although all those involved know what the final product will look like. Schaefer did, however, imply that Golf GTI will resemble the original Golf in certain ways. As a point of comparison, the first Golf was released 54 years ago. It was propelled by a four-cylinder, 1.6-litre, naturally aspirated gasoline engine that produced 108 horsepower, that promises for it to be a powerful mean machine.
