As the LA Auto Show continues, Volkswagen has revealed many changes about its immediate future. The production-ready ID2all concept will appear at the 2025 Munich Motor Show, along with an SUV based on the all-electric hatchback. The also announced major improvements to its ID family of EVs. The SUV version will be unveiled in concept form in September 2025 in Munich. As part of the company’s goal to restore VW’s status as a “loved brand,” CEO Thomas Schafer plans to make a significant stylistic leap with the hatchback and SUV.
The production version of the VW ID2all concept is expected to be ready for release in late 2025 or early 2026, and that the new EV will be the “beginning point” for a new era for VW because “customers will see there has been a change, and a much bigger change than expected.” Along with “going back to where we came from,” the R&D chief also confirmed “huge improvements” from 2026 to the current ID line of EVs, including greater functionality, improved battery prices, and a whole new design.

The ID2all concept, which showcases design chief Andreas Mindt’s vision for the future of VW designs that are more amiable and influenced by previous successful Golf models, is expected to serve as the inspiration for the new and updated ID vehicles and SUVs. This is more in line with “what Volkswagen stands for” in terms of design. It is “easy” to add performance to electric cars, but it is more difficult to add the GTI “DNA”—the things that made Golf GTIs great in the past. A sporty GTI variant is also in the works. On the other hand, he added, the new ID2 GTI features “ideas that you’ll be surprised.” 2026 will see the release of the first electrified GTI.
The combustion engine lineup will be “slimmer than today” due to upcoming EU7 emissions. There would be milder hybrid powertrain alternatives, though. Some models will be discontinued, although the Polo would not be among them. With the new regulations in place, the tiny hatchback that was sold in India (though it is unlikely to return) will get a comprehensive upgrade.
Speaking about the investment in parallel architectures, like as the MEB for electric cars and the MQB for combustion-engined models, it is “a huge effort.” The MQB design does not, however, have an expiration date because EV sales have not met expectations. Indeed, there could be one of the possibilities for its evolution which is for VW to once more include electric powertrains into it.

In order to grow its activities in India, the VW Group is presently searching for local partners, even though neither the ID2 hatch nor SUV have been launched for our market. It partnered with Mahindra just this year to enable the use of VW batteries in the Indian company‘s INGLO platform-based cars, such as the BE 6e and XEV 9e. Volkswagen is preparing a 2026 small SUV based on the Skoda Kylaq and is working on facelifts for the virtues and Taigun. For a time, the ID.4 has been listed on the company’s website in order to assess feedback while it evaluates a mass market EV for India.
