Bajaj Auto has overtaken Ola Electric to become India’s top-selling electric scooter brand in December. This marks a major shift in the market, as Ola has dominated the electric scooter space for several quarters.

According to recent sales data, Bajaj has consistently outsold Ola in the first three weeks of December. In the first week, Bajaj sold 4,988 Chetak Electric scooters, followed by TVS with 3,964 scooters and Ola with 3,351 scooters. This trend continued in the second and third weeks, with Bajaj maintaining its lead.

Also, TVS is continually expanding the number of touchpoints for its electric scooter, the I-Qube. Another monumental data point is the resurgence of Ather Energy, which has gained popularity following the launch of their family-style scooter, Rizta.

Bajaj’s success is said to be on account of its strong market presence and the popularity of its  Chetak electric scooter.

The company’s managing director, Rajiv Bajaj had earlier predicted that Bajaj would become the top-selling electric scooter brand in the country.

Ola owned by Bhavish Aggarwal, on the other hand, has been facing challenges in recent months. The company has been dealing with negative publicity surrounding its after-sales service, which may have impacted sales.

Additionally, Ola’s market share has been declining steadily since June, when it held a 49% market share. The Indian electric scooter market is becoming increasingly competitive with several players vying for market share and everyone is looking at how the market evolves in the coming months.

Here are the sales figures for the first three weeks of December:

Week 1: Bajaj (4,988), TVS (3,964), Ola (3,351)
Week 2: Bajaj (9,513), TVS (7,567), Ola (6,387)
Week 3: Bajaj (13,840), TVS (11,667), Ola (10,144)

The previous models of the Bajaj Chetak were powered by petrol engines (either 2-stroke or 4-stroke). The modern version, known as the Chetak Electric is fully electric and features a 4.2 kW BLDC motor paired with a 2.89 kWh lithium-ion battery pack. It offers a range of 90 kilometres.
