New Delhi: The Union Government has reduced the number of subsidised cooking gas cylinders to four from nine available annually to poor households under the popular welfare scheme Ujjwala.

A top petroleum ministry officer, Praveen M Khanooja, pointed out that the initiative was to reduce the burden of loss on the state-run oil companies, which is losing Rs 700 on every 14.2 kg LPG refill, Rs 6 per litre on petrol, and Rs 30 a litre on diesel.

The oil companies recently hiked the domestic LPG price by Rs 29 for a 14.2 kg cyclinder. The government introduced a targeted subsidy of Rs 200 per 14.2-kg LPG cylinder in May 2022, credited directly to beneficiaries’ bank accounts after every refill is purchased for up to 12 cylinders annually.

The subsidy was increased to Rs 300 per 14.2-kg cylinder, with a proportionate benefit extended to 5-kg cylinders in 2023. However, the reduction in the subsidised quota follows increases in LPG prices, aligning with the revised entitlement reflecting the average annual consumption among PMUY households.
