Indian Economy Review: Female Enrollment Ratio In Higher Education Quadrupled In 20 Years

Department of Economic Affairs, GOI released a report titled ‘The Indian Economy: A review’ reflecting the growing enrolment ratio of women in higher education in India.

Notably Union Government decided to publish ‘Indian Economy-A Review’ prepared by the office of Chief Economic Advisor (CEA) V Anantha Nageswaran instead of releasing Economic Survey. ‘The Indian Economy: A review’ report provided a snapshot of reforms in the education sector during the last decade.

The report shows, the four-time increment in Female Gross Enrollment Ration (GER) in higher education from 6.7% in 2000-01 to 27.9% in 2020-21.


According to the report, “More girls are now in the higher education than boys. The GER for girls increased from 3.4 crore in 2014 to 4.1 crore in 2023.” Also, female enrolment in senior secondary education has become more than double to 58.2 per cent in 2021-22 from 24.5 per cent in 2004-05, said report.

The report reflects the progress in the field of Education during the last 10 years under the Narendra Modi government. The report points out that the number of universities has gone up from 723 to 1,113 from 2014-2023.

The report informs further that woman enrolling in tertiary education is also increasing remarkably.

  • National Curriculum Framework for Foundational Stage (NCF FS) was launched on October 20, 2022 along with learning teaching material (JaduiPitara) and textbooks, launched in 2023

  • 200 channels with more than 13,000 contents produced for telecast in 31 languages were started.
  • 3,062 schools are upgraded at elementary, secondary and higher secondary level.
  • 235 new residential schools and hostels are opened.
