More than two crore people will cast their vote today in the Haryana assembly elections in one of the first major polls after the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. The elections to 90 assembly constituencies across Haryana will be held in a single phase to determine whether the BJP government can retain the power for a third term or if Congress will be able to return to power after a decade gap.
A total of 1031 candidates are in the fray from across political parties and as independents. As major political parties are contesting without alliance, the battle for power is even more stiff. The poll results for both the Jammu and Kashmir elections, which were held earlier, and Haryana will be released on October 8 simultaneously.

As per political observers, the result of the assembly elections will be significant for the confidence of the ruling BJP at the Centre, as the saffron party failed to secure the absolute majority and is dependent on its partners in the NDA to retain the power. Congress, on the other hand, is confident in wrestling back Haryana, encouraged by its performance during the general elections. In 2024, the grand old party won five out of ten Lok Sabha constituencies against the 2019 debacle. The key parties in the state includes BJP, Congress, Aam Aadmi Party, Indian National Lok Dal-Bahujan Samaj Party (INLD-BSP) and Jannayak Janta Party (JJP)-Azad Samaj Party (ASP).
The Congress is banking on the purported anti-incumbency evident in unemployment, farmers’ protest and wrestlers protest among others, to return to the power while the BJP is promising development.
