Taking down the incumbent Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Santhosh Bawari in the Anupgarh constituency, Indian National Congress (INC) candidate Shimla Devi fetched the majority of the votes in the assembly election held on November 25. While Shimla Devi secured 1,02,746 votes, constituting her victory, the BJP candidate Santosh Bawari garnered 64,865 votes.
Anupgarh is one of the eight assembly segments constituting the Bikaner Parliament seat. This assembly seat is reserved for candidates from Scheduled Caste (SC) with SC voters constituting 43.24% of the total electors in the constituency and approximately 80.87% of voters are rural, while the urban electorate constitutes 19.13%, according to the 2011 Census. INC was unable to fetch a majority in the constituency ever since its formation. With more careful and strategic moves, Congress could change its fate this time in the constituency.
Santosh of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had won 43.30% of the votes in the 2018 assembly election, while Kuldeep Indora of the Indian National Congress (INC) received 31.78%, leaving a margin of 11.72% between the two leading candidates. Since its formation in 2008, the first winner of the constituency was Pawan Kumar Duggal of the Communist Party of India (CPI). Shimla Bawri and Santosh from the BJP followed in 2013 and 2018, respectively.
However, going by the latest reports, out of the total 199 seats in the state, the BJP wrested power from the Congress with a clear majority and emerged victorious in the state. BJP won a majority with 115 seats and the Congress came second, securing 69 seats. Along with Rajasthan, the Assembly elections were held in four other states including Madhya Pradesh, Telangana, Chhattisgarh and Mizoram. Results of these states were also announced, with BJP becoming victorious in three states – Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh, and Congress taking Telangana.
