State Assembly Elections 2023: Exit Polls Receive Mixed Reactions

As only few days are remaining for the vote counting in five states – Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Mizoram, and Telangana – multiple media outlets released their exit polls for the state assembly elections 2023 on Thursday. Most of the survey results predicted a BJP take over in Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh and the party will resume power in Madhya Pradesh. Surveys also predicted Congress taking the lead in Telangana, and in Mizoram the ruling party is expected to witness loss of votes this time.

For Telangana, majority of the exit poll results have supported Congress against the incumbent BRS. Since BRS under K Chandrasekhar Rao was expecting a hattrick victory in the state, many BRS activists have openly criticised the exit polls. The BRS leader Y Sathish Reddy took to his X handle and said the “exact polls” that will be declared after the counting on December 3 would be a “slap” on the exit polls. “CM KCR garu will win & hit the hattrick mark”, he added. Some other worker of the party tweeted the poll survey as “exaggerated excited poll survey”.

KT Rama Rao, the Telangana minister of IT held a press meeting on Thursday and said that the exit poll was “illogical”. Telangana went to polling booths on November 30, the same day where the poll surveys were out. “People are still voting… It is ridiculous of the Election Commission of India also basically to allow for exit polls at 5:30 when people are queuing up to vote till 9pm”. According to him the survey results were absurd and urged his party cadre to not believe the “nonsense”.

“The election was not against Congress and BRS. Four crore people were against BRS”, said Telangana Congress president Revanth Reddy on Thursday. “This is the victory of the people of Telangana…We will get the approval of the six guarantees and will make it an act in the first cabinet itself”, he added.

On Madhya Pradesh exit polls, which all the major surveys have clearly predicted BJP’s victory, the state’s incumbent Home Minister Narottam Mishra said that the BJP would win around 150 seats of the total 230. According to him, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s consideration to the poor benefitted BJP in the election. He also criticised the previous Congress government and said, “Everyone knows how Kamal Nath had ruled… Their vision is the vision of lies”.

Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan reiterated that there was no competition in Madhya Pradesh and BJP is going to grab a clear majority. “The love and guidance of PM Modi, the strategies of Amit Shah, the leadership of JP Nadda, the efforts of our workers and the schemes of our government made it clear that BJP is getting a majority in the state”, he responded. “Wherever we used to go, women of the state were there to support us”. He was speaking to the news agency ANI.

While commenting on the exit polls, the Chhattisgarh Chief Minister and Congress leader Bhupesh Baghel said that they have targeted of getting at least 75 seats and “we will remain close to that figure”.

Former Chief Minister and BJP leader Raman Singh said that, “BJP will form government with a clear majority. The results on December 3 will show that Congress will go below 35, they will not even get 40 seats”.

As said by the Chhattisgarh BJP president Arun Sao, exit polls have a limited size. “The sample size of the BJP is huge… I have been roaming in Chhattisgarh for the past 1.5 years. I have gone to each Vidhan Sabha and had conversations with people… On that basis, I can say that on December 3, the BJP will come to power”, he said.

Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot rejected the exit polls and expressed his confidence for forming government in the state. “BJP is not winning in any of the 5 states. People will repeat our government in Rajasthan and there are 3 reasons for this. The first reason is that there is no anti-incumbency wave against the government, even experts are saying so. The second one is CM. BJP voters will also say that the CM left no stone unturned in carrying out development work. Third is the language spoken by the Prime Minister, Home Minister, BJP Chief Ministers and Union Ministers during the campaign. Nobody liked that language”, he said.

“Exit polls, surveys are showing that Congress is winning in Rajasthan. People of the BJP are frauds. They only do Hindu-Muslim”, said Rajasthan Minister and Congress leader Pratap Khachariyawas on Thursday. “Congress will form govt in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh”, he added. “There has been positive voting in Rajasthan…We got votes from all religious communities. The exit polls show that Congress will be forming the government”, said Congress leader Gourav Vallabh.
