Bramayugam Controversy: Mammootty’s Character Name Changed Day Before Release

The Kerala High Court today closed a petition filed by a member of the Punjamon Illam, a traditional Brahmin household in Kerala against the release of the Mammootty starrer Bramayugam. The petitioner had alleged that the movie would negatively impact their family with its portrayal of the Mammootty’s character as practising black magic.

The Court however closed the case after the filmmakers agreed to change the protagonist’s (Mammootty) character name from “Kunjumon Potty” to “Kodumon Potty”. The censor board has also agreed with the filmmaker”s demand to change the character’s name.

The petitioner Punjamon Illam had claimed that the portrayal of the Punjamon or Kunjumon Potty, negatively carrying their family name could cause harm to the family”s reputation and dignity in the society. The petition was filed based on Section 5B of the Cinematograph Act, 1952 dealing with defamatory issues.

The petitioner had also demanded the withdrawal of censor certificate granted to the movie. With changing the character name, it is learnt that the petitioner’s concerns have been assuaged.

The movie directed by Rahul Sivadasan will hit the theatres tomorrow.  The plea was based on Section 5B of the Cinematograph Act, 1952 dealing with defamatory materials. The petitioner had sought to revoke the certification of the film under Section 5E of the Act if the respondents wouldn”t comply with their demand to change the name of the character.

With the teaser and the trailer already out, filmgoers are excited to watch the Mollywood superstar’s horror movie. The movie seems to be around the mysterious, horror and magical sequences as the trailer shows Mammootty in a grey-shaded negative role, allegedly practising black magic. The petitioner’s family was historically involved in ritualistic practices, as per a source taken from the book Aithihyamala.
