Its Christmas eve and the setting is 90’s Bombay. Spreading eeriness throughout the film, Katrina Kaif and Vijay Sethupathi starrer “Merry Christmas” is quite a head-scratcher which never lets it grip go on the audience. Director Sriram Raghavan, known for his pitch-dark themed movies, but this time opts for much classy, philosophical and kicky route in Merry Christmas leaving behind the racy narrative he chose for Andhadhun.
According to NDTV, the controlled momentum of the film, and even its occasional lack of pace, is an integral part of the design. The movie was brilliantly crafted, using every cut, every camera angle and foreboding without letting on what exactly is to be expected around the corner.
The film opens with a split screen, revealing two mixer-grinders, one reducing chillies and lentils to maligai podi, and other grinds tablet into powders, symbolically revealing the complicated lives of two individuals.
The movie is filled with stylish, visual and music which enhances the mystery surrounding the Christmas eve. The screenplay by Raghavan, Arijit Biswas, Pooja Ladha revolves around an unhappily married mother of a little wide-eyed girl and a mysterious loner who returns to Mumbai after a very long time. Both the protagonist in the movie is carrying a great deal of pain, which both have chose to deal with in eerily similar ways. The plot unfolds the story of two strangers-Albert (Vijay) and Maria (Katrina Kaif)– who unknowingly crosses paths and are later sucked into the void of chaos.
Merry Christmas plays out like a parable out of love and sacrifice. The movie will put the audience on a roller-coaster ride, keeping in the edge of the seat, unable to guess the next move of Albert and Maria, says India Today.
The first half is full of long pauses, putting every element of the film, including the interior of the house etched into the minds of the audience. The second half of the film then takes the viewers into Maria and Albert’s eerie waltz.
The climax and the easter eggs make up the major highlight of the film and is strewn with characters who leaves a mark. Merry Christmas is a promising art that has given a terrific start to 2024.
