Fans have been speculating about a potential cameo role by Malayalam superstar Mammootty in Asif Ali’s Rekhachithram, which hit theatres today. Seemingly confirming the rumours, Asif Ali took to Instagram and posted a photo with the actor and gave a hint to what fans can expect in the theatres.
“I have been seeing social media discussions asking whether there is Mammooka in this film. As an actor who acted in the film, I cannot give a direct answer for now. But no one is expecting Mammooka in this film. I assure you that you will not be disappointed. There is a little surprise waiting for you in this movie,” wrote Asif Ali.

The post only gave more fuel to the speculations, with many wondering what the “little surprise” could be and how Mammootty will feature in Rekhachithram. Is there a special cameo by Mammootty?
Yes, he is there in the movie.
(Spoiler Alert!)
Well, technically, he is.
Set in the isolated hills of Malakkappara, the movie is set in two timelines, the present day and events that occurred 40 years ago. The main thread of the Jofin T Chacko directorial travels along with the making and location of Bharathan’s Kathodu Kathoram and the iconic song “Devadoothar Paadi.” While the story in Rekhachithram progresses, the film shows the making of the 1985 film also going on at the time.
The scenes in Rekhachithram feature a young Mammootty shooting the Bharathan film.
In addition to that, the movie also features director Bharathan and a young Kamal, who was Bharathan’s assistant during the shooting of Kathodu Kathoram. Both are enacted by other actors.
And just when you thought it was over, there is a bonus. In the end, there is another surprise in the movie, connecting to “Mammootty chettan.”
