Indian pop icon Usha Uthup, who has enthralled audiences across languages with her resounding melodies, opened up about her initial days when she was judged by her looks and faced skepticism. The music icon shared her secret to her enduring legacy with the reminisces of the past.
The Padma Bhushan awardee is credited with several hit songs such as Ramba Ho Ho, Hari Om Hari, Koi Yahan Aha, One Two Cha Cha Cha, and Darling among others. Calling herself a “trailblazer,” the legendary singer, in an interview with Hindustan Times, recalled that her journey was not a bed of roses, but filled with challenges that taught her to stay true to herself.

“Being a trailblazer is both an honor and a responsibility,” she said, recalling her start as a nightclub singer in 1969. Usha said that she faced skepticism due to her appearance.
Looking back, Usha continues, “The reaction from the audience was mixed, but their perceptions changed once they heard my voice. This experience taught me the importance of perseverance and staying true to oneself. If my journey inspires others, especially women, to pursue their dreams despite challenges, I consider that a profound achievement. The evolving landscape of music today is filled with opportunities, and I am grateful to have contributed to paving the way for future generations,” quoted Hindustan Times.

She also revealed that her enduring legacy is a result of staying authentic to her craft and added that the journey was also about adapting and embracing change when necessary, but always with integrity and honesty. It’s a continuous process of learning and growing.
When asked about what advice she would give to young artists, Usha shared, “To young artists stepping into the music industry, my advice is to be unapologetically yourself and to approach your craft with honesty and dedication,” as stated by the Hindustan Times.
