Versatile actor Aamir Khan’s most awaited thematic sequel, Sitaare Zameen Par, is what the internet is currently buzzing about. The actor-producer, who dropped the trailer yesterday, has been receiving mixed reactions from the audience. While many looked forward to watch the film, others criticised the film for being a frame-to-frame copy of the Hollywood remake, Champions.

Sitaare Zameen Par: An Adaptation of Champions

Since the release of the trailer, the film has been facing intense online trolling, with many netizens calling it a frame-by-frame copy of the film Champions (the English remake of the Spanish original, Campeones). Notably, it was already announced by the team that it is an official adaptation of the Spanish film.

Staying true to its spiritual prequel, Taare Zameen Par, the new installment comes with a fresh set of characters while exploring the concepts of mental health and highlighting the themes of inclusivity.

Introduces 10 Debutants

The sequel also introduces ten debutant actors, including Aroush Datta, Gopi Krishna Varma, Samvit Desai, Vedant Sharma, Ayush Bhansali, Ashish Pendse, Rishi Shahani, Rishabh Jain, Naman Mishra, and Simran Mangeshkar. The ten lead roles are played by persons with disabilities such as Down Syndrome and autism.

Apart from being just an entertainer, the story and message of the film is expected inspire the audience. The film will also raise awareness towards individuals with disabilities in our society.

The Dedication of the Team Behind the Project

Unlike other films, the story of the making process of Sitaare ZameenPar was a little different. As per the reports, over 150 differently-abled individuals from across the country were selected for the film. Moreover, all the individuals were specially trained in acting by the team.

The film underwent multiple reshoots, with Aamir Khan dedicating nearly one and a half years solely to the project.

Champions: The Spanish film Directed by Javier Fesser

Sitaare Zameen Par is inspired by the Spanish sports comedy-drama Campeones. Released in 2018, the film was directed by Javier Fesser and co-written by David Marques.

The movie is originally inspired by the team Aderes of Burjassot (Valencia), a team created with people with intellectual disabilities that won twelve Spanish championships between 1999 and 2014.

Becoming a huge box office hit in Spain, it was also the country’s official entry to the 91st Academy Awards in the Best Foreign Language Film category. However, the film was not nominated. Later, Campeones was also remade into multiple languages like Arabic, German and English.

Sitaare Zameen Par 

As per the trailer, it explores the sports journey of 10 persons with disabilities and narrates their path to victory and inclusion. Aamir Khan plays a basketball coach to a team of specially-abled children, setting the stage for an inspiring and entertaining narrative laced with emotion and humor. Genelia Deshmukh stars as his love interest in the drama. Directed by R.S. Prasanna, the film has been produced by Aamir Khan Productions.
