In an enhanced monitoring drive to ensure compliance of food safety norms for eateries, the special task force from Telangana’s Commissioner of Food Safety on September 2 visited several food establishments in Banjara Hills, Hyderabad. The inspection disclosed many violations, including issues with food storage, lack of adequate hygiene, and waste articles in several restaurants’ kitchens.

The officials discovered expired ingredients in the kitchen of Niloufer Cafe, including 500 grams of cheese, Kashmiri paprika powder, and 5 kilos of roasted peanuts. They also found unlabeled food items like sugar syrup and spices inside the fridge.

The task force also conducted a search at Haiku restaurant in Banjara Hills, where it found expired ingredients such as cumin seeds, black sesame, tamarind, and red lotus flour. They also observed several other violations that include unlabeled food articles in the refrigerator, broken tiles in the kitchen, stagnated water drainage, and waste in the kitchen.

In Banjara Hills, the officials inspected another restaurant, Raja Deluxe, and found many food safety violations. During the search, the officials found slippery flooring and water stagnation in drains, in addition to several other issues in the kitchen premises. They deemed the refrigerator used to store raw meat as unhygienic and found synthetic food colours in products. Some of the food items inside the fridge had no labels, and the vegetarian and non-vegetarian food items were being stored in the same refrigerator.

They also noted the dustbins were open and the doors and windows were not close-fitted with insect-proof screens. The officials also pointed out that the FIFO process was not being maintained in the storeroom. FIFO is a storage system that helps ensure food is used before it goes bad. The task force further noted that there was no Food Safety Training and Certification trainee at the restaurant.
