Narendra Modi government to take up18 bills in the winter session of the Indian Parliament. As per the bulletin released by Lok Sabha Secretariat, the 18 bills include legislation that are aimed at replacing IPC, CrPC and Evidence Act from the colonial era. The winter session of the Parliament will be conducted from December 4 to December 22.
The bill also seeks to increase the strength of Jammu and Kashmir Assembly from 107 to 114 as a bid to provide representation for Scheduled Tribes, Kashmiri migrants and displaced persons from Jammu and Kashmir that was occupied by Pakistan.
Another major key legislation awaiting the winter session is the appointment of chief election commissioner and other members of election commission.
A proposed bill introduced in Lok Sabha, namely Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023would replace the existing Indian Penal Code, if the bills were enacted. Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973 will be replaced by The Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023
Bharatiya Sakshya Bill, 2023, which was introduced in the Lok Sabha on August 11 of this year, is expected to replace Indian Evidence Act, 1872.
The bills also include the extension of the Women’s Reservation Act’s provision to Jammu and Kashmir and Puducherry.
All the said new forms of bill were examined by the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Home Affairs. The standing committee submitted their report with dissent notes from the opposition members.
Meanwhile, the government has called for an all party meeting on December before the winter session, as reported by PTI. The meeting was actually scheduled a day prior to the winter session, but due to the vote counting in five states on December 3, the meeting was scheduled for December 2. December 3 plays a significant role the 2024 Lok Sabha election, where Narendra Modi will be running for his third term as India’s Prime Minister.
