Arvind Kejriwal Challenges Arrest In Delhi High Court; Seeks Immediate Release

On Saturday, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal approached the Delhi High Court to seek immediate release, calling his arrest and the remand order passed yesterday illegal.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader’s plea stated that both the arrest and the remand order that sent him to the Enforcement Directorate’s (ED) custody are illegal. He claimed that he had the right to be released immediately. ANI reported that an immediate hearing was sought from the Acting Chief Justice, preferably by March 24.

He is currently under the custody of ED and will remain so until March 28 as per the district court’s order.

Kejriwal was arrested by the ED on Thursday night in connection with a money laundering case to the Delhi liquor scam. On Friday, the district court granted permission to keep the AAP chief for seven days under the ED’s custody.

On Thursday, the Delhi High Court had refused to grant Kejriwal protection from arrest. The two-judge bench had stated that after hearing both sides, the court found that the there was no need to grant protection to the Delhi CM at this stage.

Earlier today, the AAP leader’s wife, Mrs. Sunita Kejriwal, read out a message sent by Kejriwal from jail. The letter stated that forces inside and outside the country were trying to weaken the country. “I am made of iron,” said Kejriwal, expressing his determination to keep continuing his work in Delhi. He stated that “not a single work of Delhi” will be stopped. Sending a message of peace, Kejriwal concluded the letter by advising fellow AAP members to continue serving the country and not to hate people from the BJP, as “they are our brothers and sisters.”
