Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar apologised today, November 8, after creating controversy by using derogatory language in the Bihar Assembly to explain the role of education and the role of women in population control. As the video of the Bihar CM explaining his point on population control went viral on social media platforms, the opposition BJP slammed Nitish Kumar as “vulgar”. Also, several Bihar women MLAs criticised the language used by Nitish Kumar.

“I apologise for my statement, take back my statement if it has sent a wrong message,” ANI quoted, as Bihar CM is saying. Earlier on November 7, Nitish Kumar made a vivid description in the Bihar state assembly of how an educated woman can restrain her husband during sexual intercourse. During this time, a few House members, including Deputy CM Tejashwi Yadav, were also seen laughing. However, Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav defended Nitish Kumar and said that he was talking about sex education, and those comments should not be misinterpreted.

“He was discussing practical steps to address population growth, and it should not be misconstrued negatively,” said Tejashwi Yadav. However, the Bihar BJP heavily criticised Nitish Kumar and wrote on its X handle, “There hasn”t been a leader more vulgar than Nitish Kumar in Indian politics. It appears that Nitish babu is bitten by the “adult, B-grade films” bug.” BJP national spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla said that the language used by the Bihar CM inside the assembly is vulgar, indecent, sexist, and patriarchal.

The National Commission for Women (NCW) had also demanded an “immediate and unequivocal apology” from Nitish Kumar. NCW Chairperson Rekha Sharma posted on X that those remarks “are an affront to the dignity and respect that every woman deserves.” Rekha Sharma also added that the derogatory and cheap language used during the speech is a dark stain on society.
