An oncologist was stabbed seven times at Kalaignar Centenary Super Speciality Hospital (KCSSH) in Guindy on Wednesday morning by a young man whose mother was being treated for cancer by the doctor. The incident has sparked outrage and protests within the medical community seeking safety measures for staff in government hospitals.

Dr. Balaji Jagannath was on duty in the oncology department at the hospital when the accused, Vignesh, approached him. As per local officials, the accused and his three friends entered the hospital premises around 10:30 am to meet his mother.

However, a heated argument erupted with Dr. Jagannath over the woman’s poor health.

Accusing the doctor of negligence, Vignesh allegedly drew a kitchen knife and stabbed Dr. Jagannath in the neck and inflicted injuries to his head and upper body.

With the timely intervention of people around, the oncologist was taken to the ICU, where he remains in stable condition, as per NDTV. A senior doctor reportedly stated that his colleague was cut on his forehead and back and was hit on his stomach.

The accused had, as per some reports, tried to escape after attacking the doctor but was apprehended and handed over to the police.

Chief Minister MK Stalin stated that he has instructed the doctor to receive all necessary treatment and to conduct a probe into the matter.

“The selfless work of our government doctors is immeasurable in providing appropriate treatment to the patients who seek government hospitals regardless of time. It is our duty to ensure their safety during this work. The government will take all measures to prevent such incidents from happening in the future,” Stalin added.
