Delhi Student Commits Suicide After Friends Shifts School To Study Science

A 16-year-old boy in Delhi committed suicide at school on Thursday. The boy, Kunal Rai is a resident of Nangloi. Kunal was distressed after his friends shifted to schools offering the science stream.

A police officer said that, “His classmate told us that he was disturbed because his friends had moved to other schools with a science stream”. Kunal was left behind as he was unable to secure a seat in the science stream.

The class 11 student died by suicide in the school’s dormitory. His body was recovered from the dormitory at Kalinga Institute of Science School in Delhi, police said.

His school didn’t offer science as a subject for higher studies so his friends moved to other educational institutions. This left Kunal isolated and sad. Though his father put in effort to counsel him to continue his education in the arts stream, Kunal struggled with loneliness and disappointment.

Kunal was the son of Shiv Chand Rai from the Rani Khera area of Delhi’s Nangloi.

“His father had counselled him to continue in the school in the arts stream. The boy was feeling lonely and was upset. On July 25, around 6 am, he died by suicide,” the police officer said.

The body was then handed over to his parents after the postmortem and no foul play is suspected, the officer said.

“We have started further investigation under inquest proceeding under sections 194 of the BNSS,” the officer said.

Around 6 am on Thursday, Kunal was found hanging from an iron bar on the ceiling, using a torn bedsheet. There was a visible ligature mark around his neck which indicated the cause of his death.
