Delhi Water Minister and AAP leader Atishi‘s hunger strike has ended after she was admitted to a hospital on June 25 after her blood sugar levels dropped to 36 during her indefinite hunger strike over the water crisis in the national capital. AAP MP Sanjay Singh stated, “The indefinite hunger strike is being stopped but we will raise our voice in the Parliament.”

The official account of the AAP took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to inform them that Atishi’s “blood sugar had dropped to 43 at midnight and 36 at 3 am.” The AAP leader was rushed to the emergency ICU at Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Hospital (LNJP) in the capital.

“She has not eaten anything for the last five days and is on an indefinite hunger strike demanding Haryana government to release Delhi’s share of water. She’s been admitted in the emergency ICU at LNJP. We pray for her speedy recovery,” said the party in an X post.

Atishi has been on an indefinite hunger strike against the Haryana government since June 21, amid a prolonged heatwave. The Delhi Water Minister accused the BJP-ruled Haryana government of allegedly withholding the national capital’s share of water, 613 MGD, by releasing 100 million gallons (MGD) less water for two weeks. The AAP government claimed that, as a result, over 28 lakh people in Delhi were being deprived of water amid an intense heatwave and a rising demand for water.

To combat the issue of water shortage, the people of the national capital have been resorting to Delhi tankers to fulfil their daily water requirements.

In a video message posted on her X account, Atishi said that along with her blood pressure and sugar levels, her weight was also reducing. “Ketone level is very high, which can have harmful and damaging effects on the body in the long run. No matter how much my body suffers, I will continue the fast till Haryana releases water,” she added.

On Sunday, VK Saxena, Delhi Lieutenant Governor, met a delegation of AAP leaders and stated that Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini has assured that he will look into whether the state can provide extra water to Delhi. Saini had earlier accused the Delhi government of neglect, mismanagement, and corruption and claimed that the state government was giving an adequate amount of water to the national capital.
