Delhi Fires Service (DFS) officials recounted that they received call at 7 pm on Saturday about students being stuck in the basement and five fire engines were dispatched to aid in rescue operations. Aside from Delhi police and DFS, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF)  has also rushed to the spot and started the rescue operations.

Due to heavy rainfall in the Capital, there was waterlogging in the area, and nearby buildings, DCP (Central) M Harshvardhan said.

“The bodies have been sent to the hospital for further legal action. Rescue operations are still underway. The water is being pumped out. There is still about 7 feet of water in the basement… I request the student community to not come here and hamper the rescue services. We share their pain but coming here to the spot is not the solution. It will hamper the rescue services,” NDTV reports as the DCP is saying.

The Delhi government has ordered a magisterial probe into the incident.

In a post on X, Delhi Public Works Department Minister Atishi wrote in Hindi, “Whoever is responsible for this incident will not be spared…”

Delhi BJP President Virendra Sachdeva claimed that this tragedy happened due to non cleaning of drains and drain water backflowed into the basement of the coaching centre at a very high speed. “Delhi Government’s criminal negligence is responsible for this mishap. Jal Board Minister Ms. Atishi & local MLA Durgesh Pathak should take responsibility and resign,” Sachdeva said.

The incident comes days after a UPSC aspirant lost his life due to electrocution near the Patel Nagar metro station in Delhi. The incident happened on July 22 afternoon when he touched an iron gate where electric current was running on it following heavy rains in the area.
