Gen Z Protest Core: How CJP Bypasses Crackdowns With Silly Memes, Humour And Digital Content

New Delhi: The recent Gen Z protest led by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) won its mission by forcing former Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan to resign from his post.

The protest, marked by memes, reels, humour, satirical self-branding and digital content, has gained attention as Gen Z’s core. The transformation of political dissent into viral humour and social media content, somehow, could bypass traditional state crackdowns. The digital weapons proved successful in mobilising youth to Jantar Mantar.

The CJP was itself born out of an online joke after India’s chief justice’s remark comparing critics and unemployed youth to cockroaches. Instead of rejecting the label, young protesters proudly adopted it, declaring protest against the paper leak and other exam irregularities.

The group demanded accountability from the government and the resignation of the education minister, which was finally saw fruit as the government approved all the demands put forward by the protesters. Protesters flooded social media timelines with fast-paced memes, inside jokes, and raw, unfiltered video clips straight from protest sites.

Armed with mobile phones and portable mics, youth-led digital live reporting bypassed traditional broadcast channels, turning civic dissent into viral, highly engaging short-form content. The protesters also tarnished a section of the traditional media reporters, calling them Godi Media, for their pro-government stance.
