Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday said that Hindus do not indulge in communalism in the state and accused the Bangladesh-origin minority community of voting for the Congress in large numbers in the Lok Sabha polls without taking into account the development work done by the BJP-led governments.

He also alleged that it is the only community in Assam that indulged in communalism. Biswa added that the BJP missed out on the votes because it stood up for Hindu society. While speaking at a felicitation programme of winning candidates of the BJP and its allies at the party headquarters, he said that the ruling alliance garnered 47 percent of the votes polled. At the same time, Congress and its allies could only bag 39 percent of the votes.

“One thing this election proved is that Hindus do not indulge in communalism. If someone commits communalism in Assam, one community does it, one religion does it, and no other religion commits communalism there. This election is proof of that,” said Sarma.

The NDA won 11 of the 14 seats in Assam in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, while the INDIA bloc, led by the Congress, won three seats.
Sarma said that the minority-dominated areas have no roads, and no electricity, but they have been voting overwhelmingly for Congress. In contrast, though the BJP has been working for the Assamese and tribals, these communities have not voted 100 percent for the saffron party, he added.

Sarma alleged that the members of the community who voted for Congress aiming to control the state within the next 10 years, had attached a police station in Lakhimpur and tried to encroach land in Kokrajhar when the BJP government was “inactive” since the Model Code of Conduct was in place.

“This time, we got 47 per cent votes. Our target will be to get 50 per cent of the votes in 2026 state polls,” the BJP leader added.

Piling the heat on the Congress was in power until 2016 when the BJP managed to win the largest Northeastern state, Sarma switched from Congress to the saffron party in 2015, he said, “During the Congress days, the minority community was living in misery due to poverty. In the minority areas, there was not a single road, no electricity, no thought of increasing prices.”
