Trinamool Congress MP Derek O”Brien was suspended from the Rajya Sabha on Thursday for the remainder of the winter session. The TMC MP was suspended for “ignoble misconduct.” Earlier in the day, the opposition MPs trooped into the Well of the House, demanding a discussion on the Parliament security breach.
Rajya Sabha, the Upper House of Parliament, has adopted a motion for the suspension of Derek O”Brien. At the same time, the proceedings of the Upper House were adjourned till 2 PM after an uproar by opposition members over TMC MP Derek O”Brien”s suspension. According to Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar, the TMC leader disrupted the proceedings of the House by entering the Well of the House. The opposition MPs moved 28 notices seeking the suspension of business for the day and demanded discussion on the security breach that happened on December 13. However, the Rajya Sabha Chairman disallowed the notices. Opposition MPs then moved into the Well of the House and shouted slogans. They also demanded Union Home Minister Amit Shah”s reply on this matter.
Jagdeep Dhankhar condemned the unruly behaviour of the opposition MPs, saying it violated the rules. The Economic Times reported that Derek O”Brien moved into the area in front of the Chair on this occasion and flung his arms in the air. Jagdeep Dhankhar then named O”Brien and said he should leave the House. The Rajya Sabha Chairman also called TMC MP”s conduct “defiance” of the Chair and “serious misconduct.”
Earlier, the Parliament witnessed a major security breach as two people jumped into the Lok Sabha chamber from the public gallery. The intruders also released yellow gas from canisters and shouted slogans. Four people were arrested in connection with this incident. Meanwhile, the Lok Sabha secretariat has suspended eight security personnel over this security breach.
