Karnataka Declares Tulu As Second Official Language, Approves Rs 82 Lakh For Its Promotion
Bengaluru, Karnataka: Karnataka government on Friday, September 18, declared Tulu as an additional official language of the state. The declaration of Tulu as the second official language was made at a special cabinet meeting today.
The cabinet also approved an annual grant of Rs 82 lakh for Tulu language training and translation activities. The decision fulfils a long-standing demand for formal recognition of Tulu in the region, where it is widely spoken.

Chief Minister DK Shivakumar announced that the government decided to grant the official language status to the Tulu considering the demand of the people of undivided Dakshina Kannada.
“It will be treated as an additional official language in undivided Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts,” the chief minister said. A Dravidian language with a history of more than 2,000 years and is spoken by nearly one crore people globally, Tulu is mainly spoken in the undivided Dakshina Kannada and Udupi regions and parts of Kasaragod.
The chief minister further said that the government is also discussing the proposal to rename Dakshina Kannada district as Mangaluru, adding that public opinion will be collected alongside a formal debate.
