Kerala Tourist Dies, Another Missing After Entering Frozen Sela Lake In Arunachal Pradesh

Arunachal Pradesh: A tourist from Kerala died, and another went missing after they entered the frozen Sela Lake in Arunachal Pradesh’s Tawang district while trying to rescue a fellow traveller on Friday afternoon, police said.

The incident took place around 3 pm at Sela Lake, a popular tourist spot located at an altitude of over 13,000 feet.

The two men, identified as Dinu (26) and Mahadev (24), were part of a seven-member tourist group from Kerala.

According to Tawang superintendent of police D.W. Thungon, one member of the group first stepped onto the ice-covered lake and fell in.

Dinu and Mahadev entered the lake to help him. The man who fell into the lake survived and managed to come out on his own.

However, Dinu was later found dead in the lake, while Mahadev remains missing. A joint rescue operation was carried out by the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF).

Due to poor visibility and harsh weather conditions, the search for the missing tourist was suspended and will resume on Saturday morning.

Dinu’s body has been kept at the Jang Community Health Centre, where a post-mortem examination will be conducted.

Police said warning boards were installed around Sela Lake, clearly prohibiting visitors from walking on frozen lakes.

The district administration had also issued an advisory in December warning tourists that the ice may be unstable and dangerous.

Sela Lake is one of the most visited tourist attractions in Tawang district, especially during the winter season.
