Congress MP and Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi today offered tributes to the former Kerala chief minister and Congress leader Oommen Chandy on his first death anniversary. In a post on X, Rahul Gandhi called Chandy ‘a true leader of the people, embodying the essence of a Jananayak.’

The Congress leader observed that the former chief minister spent his life in the service of the people of Kerala with unwavering dedication, pointing out that the journey of Oommen Chandy and Congress was  intertwined.

“As a people’s representative, a minister, and as Chief Minister, he believed deeply in serving those he had the privilege to represent, embodying the essence of a Jananayak. His life stands as a testament to leadership with vision, dedication, and care,” wrote the Congress leader, stating that celebrating him as a compassionate, humble, and committed people’s leader, an indelible part of Kerala’s history.

 

Served as the tenth chief minister from 2005 to 2006 and 2011 to 2016, Oommen Chandy left an undeniable imprint in Kerala’s political legacy. In 2022, Chandy became the longest-serving MLA in Kerala – from 1970 until his death – representing his home town Puthuppally constituency. Handling a diverse organizational portfolio that began from being an activist of Kerala Students Union (KSU) during his study times, he has held positions such as Minister of Labour, Leader of Opposition, chief minister and general secretory of All India Congress Committee among others.

One of the milestones in his political career, Chandy received the United Nations Public Service Award for his Mass Contact Programme (Jana Samparkka Paripadi), through which he heard and solved complaints from the people. His death had caused widespread mourning across the state, with many commoners coming forward and explaining their personal experiences with the former chief minister.
