Out of two men arrested in the murder case of a senior police officer in Manipur’s border town Moreh, it has been found that one of them serves as a BJP treasurer of a district.

BJP leader Hemkholal Mate was arrested from Moreh on Tuesday along with another accused Philip Khaikholal Khongsai in the murder case of Manipur police officer Chinthgam Anand Kumar, reports NDTV.

BJP’s senior Vice-President of Manipur N Nimbus Singh said that the party executive has been expelled after the emergency meeting of the party. The accused serves as the treasurer of the saffron party.

The accused, Mate, is also the chief of K Moulsang village and finance secretary of the Mate Tribe Union (MTU). Meanwhile, Philip is an ex-Indian army soldier as well as president of Moreh Youth Club.

As per the report, Chingtham Anand was shot dead on October 31, 2023, while overseeing a helipad in Moreh.

“After calling an emergency executive committee of the party today, he (Mate) has been expelled from the primary membership of our party,” BJP state President N Nimbus Singh said.

“We will also conduct a comprehensive background check of all members and if any member of our party is found involved in criminal activities, we will take disciplinary action,” he added.

The Manipur Police said that the accused are taken to the office of the Moreh juridical magistrate. Later then they were taken into police custody for nine days. Demanding the release of the accused, many protestors surrounded the Moreh police station. They had alleged that the police commandos had arrested innocent men and also demanded to hand over the case to the National Investigation Agency (NIA), reports Economic Times.
