West Bengal: 3 Killed As School Van Hits Passenger Train At Open Railway Crossing In Murshidabad

Murshidabad, West Bengal: At least three people including two students lost their livevs after a passenger train struck a school van in Berhampore railway crossing in West Bengal’s Murshidabad early Friday. The accident happened at around 7 am at a level-crossing gate near the Karna Subarna Railway Station.

Several other students sustained injuries in the collision. The incident reportedly occured at 7 am, when students were going to the school. The incident occurred reportedly due to the negligence from the gatekeeper, who was allegedly drunk on duty, and failed to lower the gate. The gateman had left the level crossing gate open, causing the accident.

Eastern Railway official said that the car, carrying the students to school, was crossing the rail lines at the level crossing gate near Karna Subarna station, about 48 km from Katwa, when the local train hit the vehicle.

Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh for the families of those killed in Murshidabad train accident. Authorities have suspended two railway workers including the gateman and a supervisor for negligence at work. Rhe railways has stated that strict action will be taken against those found guilty.
