On Monday, actor and politician Thalapathy Vijay, in strong words, attacked the Centre over its implementation of the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA), 2019. In a statement released on social media platform X, the actor said that it is “not acceptable” to implement the CAA. Vijay heads Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), a political party he recently launched.
“It is not acceptable to implement any law like the Indian Citizenship Amendment Act 2019 (CAA) in an environment where all citizens of the country live with social harmony,” a rough translation of his statement, released on Tamil, said.

Thalapathy Vijay also urged the Tamil Nadu government to ensure that the law does not get implemented in Tamil Nadu.
“The rulers should give an assurance that they will not implement this law in Tamil Nadu,” the statement added. It was on February 2, the actor entered into politics and unveiled the name of his political party.
Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin launched a scathing attack on the Union BJP Government, accusing it of weaponising the CAA to discriminate based on religion and race. He criticised the enactment of the CAA as a betrayal of Muslims and Sri Lankan Tamils, emphasising the need to repeal the legislation to uphold social harmony and secularism. Calling it as BJP government”s “divisive agenda”, MK Stalin, concluded that “People will teach them a befitting lesson.”
Union BJP Government”s divisive agenda has weaponised the Citizenship Act, turning it from a beacon of humanity to a tool of discrimination based on religion and race through the enactment of #CAA. By betraying Muslims and Sri Lankan Tamils, they sowed seeds of division.

Four years after the passing of the CAA in parliament, the Centre government notified the CAA-19 rules on Monday. The act expedites citizenship for undocumented non-Muslim migrants from Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan who arrived in India before December 31, 2014.
The implementation of the CAA was the highlight of the BJP’s election campaign before the 2019 election, and its implementation aligns with Home Minister Amit Shah’s recent assurance that the CAA will indeed be notified prior to the upcoming election.
