The Press Information Bureau (PIB) has debunked the claims that the National Testing Agency (NTA) is a private entity that has been circulating on social media. The viral social media post further alleged that it is not subject to the Right to Information (RTI) Act.
The NTA was engulfed in controversies due to alleged irregularities in the NEET, the undergraduate medical entrance examination, and the cancellation of the UGC-NET.

Amid the ongoing controversies, a social media post claiming that the NTA is a private institution and does not fall under the RTI Act has gone viral. A senior journalist Pankaj Pachauri shared the NTA certificate of incorporation under the Societies Registration Act on X and wrote, “Shocking to know that the NTA is a private society deciding the future of the students to publicly funded government institutions. Not under RTI = no info. No public oversight = no accountability. That’s why the govt and the ministry can wash their hands off the scam.”
However, debunking the claims, the PIB fact check said that the NTA is under the ambit of RTI and DB and the NTA as well as the governing body are in fact appointed by the centre.
Taking to the social media platform X, the PIB Fact Check wrote, “It is being claimed that NTA is a private organisation and it does not come under the RTI Act #PIBFactCheck. This claim is #Fake @NTA_Exams is within the purview of RTI. DG, NTA and Governing Body are appointed by Government of India.” “NTA is a separate legal entity and has been registered as a Society under the Societies Registration Act,” it added.

Recently, Member of Parliament P Wilson too had raised similar concerns. He had said that the lack of legislation may allow it to avoid accountability, and face no consequence for “illegal activities”.
