Six Days After Posting Image Tied To Logain Killings, BJP Minister Offers No Clarification

A social media post by a state minister from Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has triggered widespread criticism after it appeared to reference the 1989 Logain massacre in Bhagalpur, Bihar.

Six days after the post was published on X, it remains visible on the minister’s profile, with no official response or clarification from the party.

The controversy began when the minister shared an image of a cauliflower field shortly after the NDA’s landslide victory in the 2025 Bihar Legislative Assembly election.

Several opposition leaders, civil society members, and human rights groups argued that the image alluded to the Logain killings, where victims’ bodies were reportedly concealed under cauliflower and cabbage saplings.

The Logain massacre took place during the Bhagalpur violence of 1989 in Bihar, one of India’s most severe episodes of communal conflict. According to official records, 116 Muslims were killed in the village of Logain.

Investigations later revealed that their bodies had been buried in large pits and covered with vegetable saplings to hide the evidence. The incident remains a significant and traumatic part of Bihar’s modern history.

The minister’s post has sparked renewed discussion about the use of sensitive historical symbols in political communication. Critics say the post is inappropriate for an elected representative and could deepen communal tensions.

Two Members of Parliament have formally condemned the message, stating that it “glorifies the killing of people” and disrespects the memory of the victims.
Over the past year, cauliflower imagery has reappeared in various political contexts, including during the Nagpur violence in March 2025 and a meme posted by the Karnataka BJP unit in May 2025.

Observers say this pattern has contributed to growing concerns over communal messaging on social platforms. As of Wednesday, neither the minister nor the BJP leadership has issued a statement addressing the criticism.

The post continues to attract strong reactions online, with several organisations calling for action and accountability, arguing that references to communal violence must be handled with care and responsibility. The matter continues to draw national attention as demands for an official response increase.
