Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched a harsh attack against Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar over his population control remark in the State Assembly and said that “They are not even ashamed.”

Addressing a poll rally in Madhya Pradesh”s Guna, PM Modi slammed Mr Kumar without naming him: “A big leader of the INDI alliance, “Ghamandiya Gathbandhan” used indecent language for women inside Assembly yesterday. They are not ashamed.”

He also criticised the INDIA bloc members for maintaining silence in this regard. “No leader of the INDI alliance said a single word against it. People who think like this about women, can they do anything good for you?,” he asked.

It was on Tuesday, during a debate on caste census on the Winter Session of the Assembly, Chief Minister made the remark that women should be educated to control population. Mr Kumar using hand gestures and graphic language explained how education enables married girl to restrain her husband from completing the sexual intercourse which could result in pregnancy. He then added that fertility rate of the state, as per the report last year, has now dropped to 2.9 per cent from 4.3 per cent.

As his derogatory remarks created row, on Wednesday, the Chief Minister tendered apology: “I apologise for my statement, take back my statement if it has sent a wrong message,” ANI quotes as he is saying.

BJP lashed out at Mr Kumar”s words, and BJP legislators staged protest denying his entry into assembly.

The National Commission for Women chairperson, Rekha Sharma, sought “an immediate and unequivocal apology,” from the Chief Minister over his remarks, and on X, wrote: “His crass remarks in the Vidhan Sabha are an affront to the dignity and respect that every woman deserves. Such derogatory and cheap language used during his speech is a dark stain on our society.”
