"They Can Never Do It"; Gajendra Sekhawat On Congress's Claim About Conducting Caste Census In Rajasthan

Union Minister Gajendra Singh Sekhawat responded to Congress party’s poll promise of carrying out caste census if they win in Rajasthan. Mr. Sekhawat said that such census does not come under the purview of state government , therefore, Congress cannot do it and accused Ashok Gehlot, current Chief Minister of Rajasthan, of “dividing the nation”.

He said, “they can never do it (caste census) because it is not in the purview of the state government. As per the constitution, the Centre is subject and only the central Government can do it…their party (Congress) has always divided the nation and they are trying to do it once again”, said Mr. Sekhawat while talking to reporters.

Earlier, Mr’ Gehlot released a manifesto of Congress for Rajasthan assembly election and announced seven “guarantees” to the people of Rajasthan, if Congress is re-elected in the state. In the manifesto, the party said, “to formulate policies based on the spirit of equal social welfare for all sections of the society, we will conduct caste based census”. The party also promised about minority reservations on the basis of their population after the caste census.

The manifesto was released by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, chairman of the manifesto committee C. P. Joshi and former deputy Chief Minster Sachin Pilot. It was released at the party office in Jaipur.

Rajasthan will go for assembly election on November 25 and vote will be counted on December 3.  In 2013 legislative assembly, BJP bagged 163 seats and formed government in Rajasthan. In the next assembly election that took place in 2018, Congress bagged 100 seats and formed government by crossing BJP who won 73 seats.
