The speculations are going widespread around Tamil Nadu political circles that Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) leader and Sports Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin will be promoted to be the Deputy Chief Minister of the state in the upcoming days, India Today reports.
Sources within the party told India Today that as DMK supremo and Chief Minister of the State, MK Stalin is to undertake a foreign trip in February, opening the way for Udhayanidhi Stalin to take on the role of Deputy Chief Minister. It has been anticipated that the elevation to the post is likely to occur following DMK”s Youth Wing meeting in Salem which is scheduled on January 21.
However, DMK Organisational Secretary TKS Elangovan communicated his lack of awareness concerning Udhayanidhi Stalin“s appointment as Tamil Nadu”s Deputy Chief Minister but recognises his active participation in the party. Stating that final decision rests with DMK chief, Elangovan says, “There is nothing wrong with it, as he is very active. But whether he will become Deputy Chief Minister or not will be decided only by the Chief Minister and not others,” reports India Today.
Meanwhile, Udhayanidhi Stalin underplayed the entire episode and stated it to be a “rumour”. “Only the Chief Minister has to take the decision. It is just a rumour”, Udhaynidhi Stalin said.
On the other hand, All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) responded that Udhayanidhi Stalin becoming a Deputy Chief Minister can not be dismissed as a rumour since it is a fact.
“This is what we have been saying since last one year. From the time he (Udhayanidhi) was given a ticket to contest in Assembly elections. Then he became a minister and now Deputy Chief Minister. He will be the CM face in 2026 and this shows that DMK is the perfect example of “parivarvad” in the name of democracy,” AIADMK spokesperson Kovai Sathyan said.
He then added that only people in the family are capable of leading the party, reflecting the absence of democracy in DMK, but in AIADMK, even a grass-roots worker can become the head of the party.
