Nimisha Priya's Fate Uncertain: Yemeni Family Yet To Respond to $1 Million Offer As The Indian Nurse Awaits Death

Sana’a, Yemen: Samuel Jerome, a rights activist who holds the power of attorney of Nimisha Priya’s mother, Prema Kumari, says the family of the deceased Yemeni citizen is yet to accept the offer of 1 million UD dollars (approximately Rs 8.57 crore) to save Nimisha Priya, a 38-year-old nurse from Kerala who is facing scheduled execution on July 16.

There were reports that discussions are taking place with the help of mediators for the potential pardoning of the deceased man’s family. However, the family has not responded yet to the $1 million blood money offer.

“There is nothing called blood money. “If the family forgives, then there is money to be paid. “That is called blood money,” Jerome said while speaking to Indian Today Global. 

On Wednesday, Communist Party of India (Marxist) MP John Brittas appealed to External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar to urgently intervene and halt the scheduled execution of an Indian nurse in the gulf nation. In a letter, the Kerala MP noted reports of Nimisha Priya’s execution on July 16, while urging the government to engage at the highest diplomatic levels to stop the execution and explore the possibility of securing a pardon from the deceased’s family.

Pardon or Diyat is a legal provision in Islamic law that allows the victim’s family to accept compensation in exchange for forgiving the culprit.
