Edited by Aishwarya Krishnan

During an election campaign, Mahesh Sharma, BJP MP and the party’s candidate from Gautam Buddha Nagar in Uttar Pradesh, made a controversial statement wherein he states that those who do not think Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath as their own are traitors of the country. His statements ahead of the elections have sparked a row with opposition leaders.

While speaking during the campaign, the BJP MP said, “Those who do not consider PM Modi-CM Yogi as their own, will not consider their father as their own either. If anyone says he is your own more than Modi-Yogi, then he is a traitor of this country.”

According to reports, Sharma made the controversial statements while addressing the people of Bulandshahr who complained of being unhappy with the BJP.

Sharma’s video has gone viral on X (formerly known as Twitter) with thousands of views.

Reacting to the video, National President of Indian Youth Congress Srinivas BV wrote, “The time has come to decide whose you are?” He said that the BJP MP has “threatened voters by saying that every that every citizen of India who does not consider Modi-Yogi as his own (i.e. does not vote for them) does not even consider his own father as his father.”

While tagging the account of the Election Commission of India (ECI), he said that if the ECI was unbiased then it must take action, “otherwise as per Mahesh Sharma you are with Modi.”

Reacting to the video, the Indian Youth Congress questioned why the ECI was not taking any action against such statements. The official account asked, “Where is the Election Commission?”

The National Media Coordinator of Congress, Vivek Singh shared the video and observed, “The resentment of Rajputs from BJP is well known in many parts of the country.”

Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate also shared the video and stated, “The anger of Rajputs against BJP is well known in many parts of the country. It is being said that in Gautam Buddha Nagar Lok Sabha constituency, from where Mahesh Sharma is a candidate, Thakurs talked about boycotting him.”

Reportedly, West Uttar Pradesh is undergoing a ‘Kshatriya discontent.’ The caste Mahapanchayat in Muzzafarnagar expressed its anger over the poor representation of Thakurs in ticket distribution by the ruling BJP which is being perceived as alleged disrespect to heroes of the community such as Raja Mihir Bhoj.
