As part of his two-day visit to Russia, Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute at Moscow’s ‘Tomb of the Unknown Soldier’ on Tuesday. PM Modi, who is visiting the country to hold the 22nd India-Russia annual summit with President Vladimir Putin, laid a wreath at the Tomb.
“A solemn homage to the brave! PM Narendra Modi laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Moscow, saluting valour, sacrifice and indomitable human courage,” said External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal on X.

PM Modi’s trip to Moscow marks his first trip to Russia since it began a full-scale invasion in February 2022. However, the prime minister received backlash by Ukrainian president Zelenskyy criticised PM Modi, “the leader of the world’s largest democracy” interacting with “the world’s most bloody criminal in Moscow” on the same day that the country’s largest children’s hospital was attacked by, as Zelenskyy claims, a Russian missile. The attack killed 37 and injured nearly 170 people, including many children.

The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier
Located at Moscow’s Kremlin Wall, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is a war memorial that serves as a symbolic grave for all Soviet soldiers who lost their lives during World War 2.
The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier initially served as the resting place for unknown soldiers killed in the 1941 Battle of Moscow. The memorial features a dark red porphyry monument adorned with a bronze sculpture of a laurel branch and a soldier’s helmet placed upon a banner.
In front of it, a five-pointed star stands with the Eternal Flame emanating from its center. The flame illuminates a bronze inscription in Russian, translating to “Your name is unknown, your deed is immortal.”
