After Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reacted sharply on Tuesday, expressing “huge disappointment” with what he described as a “devastating blow to peace efforts.”
Zelenskyy’s criticism comes on the same day that a children’s hospital in Kyiv was attacked by a Russian missile, killing nearly 24 people.

Speaking about the attack, Zelenskyy said, “In Ukraine today, 37 people were killed, three of whom were children, and 170 were injured, including 13 children, as a result of Russia’s brutal missile strike. A Russian missile struck the largest children’s hospital in Ukraine, targeting young cancer patients. Many were buried under the rubble.”
Criticising PM Modi for meeting Putin, he said, “It is a huge disappointment and a devastating blow to peace efforts to see the leader of the world’s largest democracy hug the world’s most bloody criminal in Moscow on such a day.”

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh slammed PM Modi, and said, “Self-styled Vishwaguru, who also gave himself the title of Vishwabandhu, is in Moscow the day a hospital in Ukraine is bombed. What happened to the ‘Ukraine mein war rukwa di’ boast?”
As part of his two-day visit to Moscow, PM Modi met the Russian president’s official residence in Novo-Ogaryovo near Moscow on Monday, marking his first trip to Russia since it began a full-scale invasion in February 2022.

Yesterday, when PM Modi met with the Russian president in an informal meeting, he welcomed Putin with a big hug before they both went on a tour of the latter’s estate grounds. On Tuesday, while addressing the Indian diaspora, PM Modi called Putin his “friend” while the two countries worked towards a partnership between the two nations.
Although Russia denied Ukraine’s accusations, stating that the nations did not conduct strikes on civilian targets, the Ukrainian Security Service found fragments of the Russian Kh-101 Kalibr missile that struck the children’s hospital.
