Meta-owned social media platforms witnessed a major outage on Tuesday, March 5. Meta”s popular platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Threads, and Messenger were down on Tuesday evening for thousands of users in several countries, including India. However, the services were restored after a more than two-hour outage.

According to a CNN report, citing outage tracker Downdetector, around 500,000 Facebook users had reported issues as of mid-morning Eastern Time on Tuesday. Several outage reports had been issued regarding Instagram and Facebook Messenger too. Meta also acknowledged the widespread issues. “We”re aware people are having trouble accessing our services. We are working on this now,” said Meta spokesperson Andy Stone in an X post on March 5. Instagram users reported that they were unable to view the content. “Something went wrong” messages reportedly appeared every time Instagram users tried to access the site. At the same time, Facebook and Messenger users found themselves logged out of the platforms.

It is to be noted that Meta has about 3.19 billion daily active users across its platforms, which also include WhatsApp and Threads. According to Downdetector, the outage reports for WhatsApp and Threads were much smaller.

Later, the Meta spokesperson confirmed that the issue was resolved. Andy Stone said that a “technical issue” caused the outage. “Earlier today, a technical issue caused people to have difficulty accessing some of our services. We resolved the issue as quickly as possible for everyone who was impacted, and we apologize for any inconvenience,” wrote Andy Stone on his X handle.

Meanwhile, Meta users flocked to Elon Musk”s X (formerly Twitter) to complain about the outage. #Instagramdown, Facebook, and Mark Zuckerberg were trending on X, and Meta users also shared memes regarding the outage. Billionaire Elon Musk also took advantage of the situation to troll Mark Zuckerberg”s Meta. “If you’re reading this post, it’s because our servers are working,” wrote X boss on his handle when Meta platforms were down. Elon Musk also shared a meme to the Meta outage.
