Meta has made a significant announcement that it will soon start labelling AI-generated images. This will be applicable across all of its social media platforms, including Instagram, Facebook, and Threads. This announcement was made on Tuesday by Meta”s president of global affairs, Nick Clegg.

“As the difference between human and synthetic content gets blurred, people want to know where the boundary lies,” wrote Nick Clegg in a blog post on February 6. Meta pointed out that it already detects and labels “photorealistic images” that have been developed using our Meta AI feature. However, the tech giant wants to label AI images generated by other players in the industry.

Nick Clegg said that Meta is working with various industry partners on common technical standards that signal when a piece of content has been created using AI, including video and audio. Meta said that with this capacity, it will be possible for them to label AI-generated images that users post on Meta platforms. “We’re building this capability now, and in the coming months we’ll start applying labels in all languages supported by each app,” added Nick Clegg. He also added that Meta is taking this approach through the next year, as a number of major elections are taking place around the world.

Meta says that they have been working with other firms in the industry to develop common standards for identifying AI-generated content. Photo-realistic images created using Meta AI are already automatically labeled using visible and invisible markers. Meta claims that the invisible watermark is applied with a deep learning model.

Meta also noted the challenges of detecting AI-generated audio and videos from other companies. Meanwhile, the tech giant said that they will add a feature for people to disclose when they share AI-generated video or audio on Instagram, Threads, or Facebook. Meta also said that people are required to use this disclosure and label tool when they post organic content with a photorealistic video or realistic-sounding audio that was digitally created or altered. Users could face penalties like account suspension if they fail to make this manual disclosure.
