The Government of India has mandated the periodic update of Aadhaar cards, the 12-digit unique identity numbers that have become an essential proof of identity and address for millions of Indians. The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) is prompting citizens to update their Aadhaar details as part of a decade-long revalidation effort to ensure the integrity and accuracy of the system.

The government is prompting Aadhaar cardholders especially those with cards over a decade old to update their information and is waiving fees for updates made before September 14. Aadhaar over 10 years old can be updated for free until September 14, saving holders the standard Rs 50 fee, but it’s unclear if the deadline will be extended further.
