Amid escalating tensions in West Asia, fresh diplomatic efforts are reportedly underway to broker a temporary ceasefire in the ongoing conflict involving Iran, the United States, and Israel.

According to Axios report, discussions are ongoing for a proposed 45-day ceasefire that could pave the way for a permanent end to the war.

The development comes as US President Donald Trump continues to issue strong warnings to Tehran, including a recent 48-hour ultimatum threatening strikes on critical Iranian infrastructure if the Strait of Hormuz is not reopened.

However, sources suggest that the chances of reaching an immediate agreement within this tight deadline remain slim.

As per reports, mediators from Pakistan, Turkey, and Egypt are actively involved in negotiations. Communication is reportedly ongoing between US envoy Steve Witkoff and Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi as part of these efforts.

The proposed deal is said to be structured in two phases. The first phase would involve a 45-day ceasefire aimed at halting hostilities and building trust.

During this period, negotiations would continue toward a broader agreement to permanently end the conflict, which began on February 28 following US-Israeli strikes on Iran and subsequent retaliation.

Despite these diplomatic moves, tensions remain high. Trump has reiterated that while there is a “good chance” of reaching a deal, failure to do so could result in large-scale military action. Reports indicate that a potential US-Israeli bombing campaign is prepared but currently on hold.

Key issues in the negotiations include the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and resolving concerns over Iran’s uranium stockpile, possibly through dilution or removal. These remain major sticking points in the talks.

Meanwhile, Iranian officials have expressed deep skepticism, warning against a ceasefire that could be violated later. Senior leaders have also criticised US actions, accusing Washington of escalating the conflict under Israeli influence.

The conflict has already resulted in significant casualties and damage across the region, with Iran also reportedly expanding its strikes on Gulf energy infrastructure.
