Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau recently alleged that the Indian government is involved in the assassination of Khalistani separatist, Hardeep Nijjar.

Following the row, both Canada and India expelled senior diplomats and the situation is getting worse.

US on Wednesday favoured the Canada Prime Minister Justin Trudeau”s decision to investigate the alleged Indian involvement in the assassination of Khalistani separatist leader Hardeep Singh Najjar in the British Columbia earlier this year.

US urged Indian government to cooperate with the probe which the Canadian authorities are carrying out in the murder.

“Those who are responsible must be held accountable. We hope that traditional friends and partners will cooperate in getting to the bottom of it”, said Eric Garcetti, US Ambassador to India, on Wednesday.

Expressing his confidence over the Canadian Intelligence agency in investigating the matter, Mr Garcetti said that, “with an active criminal investigation, I hope that we can make sure that perpetrators are brought to justice and that we can all allow the space for that information and that investigation to occur before anybody leaps to judgment”.

It was on Monday Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, addressing his Parliament alleged that the Indian government had links to the assassination of Khalistani separatist, Hardeep Nijjar, an Indian designated terrorist. Mr Trudeau also initiated an investigation on the matter using Canada”s intelligence agencies. Following the row, both Canada and India expelled senior diplomats  and the situation get worsened.

“Canada is a dear friend, partner and ally and happens to be our northern neighbour. We care deeply for Canada just as we care deeply for India. I think that moments like this don”t define our relationship, but they certainly can slow down progress”, the US Ambassador added.

“We are deeply concerned about the allegations referenced by Prime Minister Trudeau earlier today”, said Adrienne Watson, US National Security Council spokesperson, in a statement released on Monday.

Britain and Australia also responded to Canada”s serious allegations on Indian government.

The British government spokesperson said they are in close touch with the Canadian partners about the “serious allegations”. “It would be inappropriate to comment further during the ongoing investigation by the Canadian authorities”, he further added.

Penny Wong, Australia’s Minister for Foreign Affairs said on Tuesday that, Australia is “deeply concerned” about Canada’s allegations on India.
