Modi's Brunei Tour Marks Visit To Iconic Mosque, An Indian-Inspired Architecture
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday visited Brunei, becoming the first Indian leader to visit the southeast Asian country since the 40-year-long bilateral trade started. The trip, while projected to improve the bilateral ties between the two countries, is marked by the Prime Minister’s visit to the iconic Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque in Brunei’s Bandar Seri Begawan.
The Prime Minister was greeted by Brunei’s religious affairs minister, Pehin Dato Ustaz Haji Awang Badaruddin, at the Masjid, and there were also members of the Indian diaspora to greet the Prime Minister. The Masjid, built in 1958, was named after Omar Ali Saifuddien III, the 28th Sultan of Brunei and the father of the current Sultan, who initiated its construction. Omar Ali Saifuddien is considered one of the architects of modern Brunei.

Notably, heralding the historic ties between India and Brunei, the Masjid’s design was hugely influenced by Mughal architecture in India. As a cherished vision of the Sultan for a grand mosque, the structure was built using the finest materials, consisting of Shanghai granite and Italian marble; stained glass and crystal chandeliers from England; fine carpets from Saudi Arabia; and a dome covered in gold leaf.
The Masjid stands as a testament to the cultural richness and as a symbol of Brunei’s deep-rooted Islamic identity. During his visit, the Prime Minister interacted with local officials and scholars.

Modi’s visit to the mosque came after he inaugurated a new building for the Indian High Commission in Brunei. The new chancery complex embodies a sense of Indianness, masterfully integrating traditional motifs and lush tree plantations. The complex’s design also represents India’s rich cultural heritage while creating a captivating and peaceful atmosphere.
An important partner of India in the ASEAN region, Brunei’s relationship with India is marked by several factors, including trade and defense, among others. The two countries are linked by history, culture, and tradition spanning a millennium. At present, approximately 14,000 Indians are residing in Brunei.
