A gunman killed at least 14 people and wounded 25 in Prague. Allegedly, he also shot his father, who was found dead by the police. The incident took place on Thursday at Prague University. The 24-year-old gunman was a student at the Faculty of Arts at the University. He has not been identified formally due to the severity of his injuries occurred while the shooting. The government of Czech Republic declared a day of mourning across the country on December 23.
President of Czech Republic, Petr Pavel said expressed his “great sadness along with helpless anger at the unnecessary loss of so many young lives”. He called the incident as the “most tragic in the history of the Czech Republic”. Mr. Pavel also pronounced his condolences to all the relatives of the victims of the tragic incident.
Media report said police discovered about large arsenal of weapons at the Prague Charles University building where the shooting happened. Police was also informed earlier in the day about the suspect heading to Prague from his town outside the capital city with the intension of taking his own life. The gunman was also said to be involved in the killing of a man and his two-month-old daughter who were found dead in woods in a village outside Prague, said Police President Martin Vondrasek. The Police President also said that the death of the gunman was likely a suicide but probe is undergoing on whether he may have been killed by police who returned the fire. Police asked not to reveal the identity of the miscreant.
Like the US, Europe also started to witness mass shooting. The latest shooting incident in the European country is considered to be one of the largest in death tolls in mass shooting by lone gunman in Europe. In 2019, a 42-year-old gunman killed six people at a hospital waiting room in the eastern Czech of Ostrava. He also shot killed himself.
